It was great to have Mukta Sharma and Simon Farr from Cambridge Building Society volunteer at our new Street Storage project last week. They helped tidy up the storage unit at Pickfords Self Store, learning how the project provides dignity and support to people experiencing homelessness who do not have anywhere to safely store their belongings. It marks the first volunteering with ITAC since we became one of The Cambridge’s three community partners as part of their Making The Difference programme which provides innovative ways to support the community and to help people have a home or shelter.
Mukta, System Expert in the IT team, said:
“It was nice to spend the afternoon helping It Takes A City and learning about all the great work they are doing to support homeless people in our city. It feels good that we at The Cambridge can volunteer and serve our community to really make a difference.”
Rory Ambler, Project Worker at It Takes A City, said:
“Imagine you had to leave home tonight with nowhere to go and just enough time to grab one bag. What would you take? Many people on the streets face the daily risk of their possessions being stolen, cleared away or destroyed. Our Street Storage project is hugely important for the homeless or people who are vulnerably housed. It’s a space for people to store their possessions safely and securely for a short or long time while they’re getting back on their feet. Pickfords provides the unit for free, and The Cambridge enables us to staff the project – their support is invaluable and without it, this project simply wouldn’t be possible.”
