Crossways

Summary

Crossways is our winter emergency accommodation project for rough sleepers, providing twenty ensuite rooms for those who would otherwise be on the streets, plus three emergency beds during SWEP (Severe Weather Emergency Protocol) periods.

Details

Open from 1st November until 31st March, working in partnership with other organisations and our fantastic volunteers, guests are provided with access to food and drinks throughout the day, a hot evening meal, laundry service and access to specialist support.

“Crossways has been a fantastic resource for rough sleepers and services such as ours. The staff, such as Chris and Emma, are trusted colleagues, whom we rely on to deliver our service.” Graham Murray, Mental Health Nurse, DDSP Team Leader

I wish that this hostel could become a permanent setting for the homeless in Cambridge. The impact that your hostel has is amazing and it has the friendliest feeling”. Dr Justin Markiewicz, CGL

Accommodation

At Crossways, each guest has their own room, behind their own door. Each room has a single bed, with clean linen provided weekly, a bedside table and lamp. There is also a desk, chest of drawers and wardrobe for guests to unpack and make the space feel like their own.

Every guest has private bathroom facilities. Most have an ensuite shower room with sink and toilet. Some may have found it difficult to wash whilst rough sleeping, so we provide them with a welcome pack of personal items to help settle in.

Every evening, volunteer Lead Cooks and their assistants prepare a two-course meal in our large kitchen. Guests are welcome to eat with others around the table, sit in the communal lounge, or take the meal to their rooms. They are also free to prepare breakfast and lunch for themselves.

I’ve been welcomed and looked after in a way that’s been heart-warming’ B (guest).

If I could I’d stay here forever. Being here has saved my life M (guest).

Volunteers

Crossways volunteers are a diverse group, reflecting all sectors of Cambridge society (aged 18+ due to the nature of the project). There are volunteer roles that do not require specific skills, qualifications, or experience.

We work in partnership with CCHP, who support the project with additional resources to purchase food and provision of a dedicated Volunteer Coordinator to work with all members of the volunteer team.

‘I have thoroughly enjoyed being part of this amazing project and meeting such incredible people along the way. I have been privileged to meet and hear the stories of the guests and I wish them all the best for the future.’ –

‘Helping at Crossways was a great experience for me. It was a great way to get out of the student bubble and really opened my eyes to how communities can come together to support those who need it most.’ —M
